History of Wedding Dresses in the 20th Century

Wedding Dress of Diana Spencer

  • In the early 20th century, wedding dresses were with tight bodice, large skirts with long sleeves and a veil. And white wedding gowns just became popular after the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe in 1840.

  • Wedding dresses in the 1920s had typically short hem in the front and a longer train in the back. In addition, they were usually worn with cloche-style wedding veils. The lowered waistline in the dress gave the figure a boyish shape, providing a straighter cut and look to the dress and bride.

  • By the 1950s, designers were looking for ways to improve the style after the restrictions that great depression of the war caused in 1930s and 40s. The iconic look is the sleeveless princess dress which became popular after the marriage of Grace Kelly and Prince Monaco, where Grace wore a white silk and lace gown. These improvements in style and function helped cultivate the early glamour of wedding gowns.

  • 1980s wedding dresses came in styles featuring detailed embellishments, puffy sleeves and keyhole back closure. This was evident in the "wedding of the century," the marriage of Lady Diana Frances Spencer and Charles, Prince of Wales. Her gown was made of six different fabrics, including 25 yards of silk taffeta, 100 yards of tulle crinoline and 150 yards of netting for the veil for the 25-foot train.
